In 1898, the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia initiated an intercity competition when it challenged a group of women from the Morris County Country Club, an all-women’s club in New Jersey, to a match at Merion Golf Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania. In 1902, the first three-city challenge – featuring New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts – was held at what was then called Baltusrol Links. The following year saw the beginning of the annual rotation of the tournament among the three cities.
The Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia (PA) will serve as the host association for the 2024 Griscom Cup Matches. Each Association is represented by a team of eight of its best golfers and an alternate who compete in a three-way, Nassau style match-play.
On the first day the matches are a team (foursomes) format and on the second day the players compete in singles matches. The event is played over two days, with the first day being a combination practice round/best ball of foursome event (all team members and their respective representatives play the practice round).
