With the forecast calling for temperatures in the 50s this weekend, golfers in Massachusetts have a rare opportunity to comfortably tee it up in a mid-February round. Many courses across the state are still months away from welcoming players, but several Cape Cod and shoreline courses are currently open for business.
To help those searching for a place to play, we have identified six public courses on Cape Cod that are open and welcoming golfers this weekend. It cannot be stressed enough that there are many other public courses in Massachusetts open for play, and we encourage golfers to search our full club directory for additional options.

Why You Should Play It – For those looking for the shortest drive to the course, Brookside is the play. The course has several memorable holes thanks to the creative redesign by John Sanford, Vice President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Speaking of short, Brookside is also home to one of the shortest par 3s in Massachusetts.

Why You Should Play It – The Volcano Hole. The golf course is fantastic and one of the more fun layouts you’ll experience in the state, but the 14th hole at Cape Cod CC is reason enough to make the trek across the bridge.

Why You Should Play It – A fine golf course in its own right, Olde Barney has a memorable collection of well-designed holes. And for those intrigued by unique experiences, the course was formerly the home to the Barnstable County Fair. We’re not entirely sure where the various attractions were located, so use your imagination.

Why You Should Play It – Bass River is the full package. It’s the only Donald Ross-designed course on the Cape that is open to the public. The breathtaking views of Bass River are not to be overlooked, and the signature par-3 closer is one you won’t soon forget. The course will also play co-host to the Massachusetts Junior Amateur and Massachusetts Girls’ Junior Amateur Championships this summer.

Why You Should Play It – While many will see temporary greens and walking only as deterrents, savvy golfers will see it as a blessing. With a winter rate of just $25, CV offers an inexpensive option during the winter, and will likely have more available tee times than its neighboring courses. As for the layout, it’s so good that it’s been selected to host the 2024 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, making it the first public course to host the event since Cape Cod CC co-hosted back in 1994.
59.6 miles from the Bourne Bridge
Why You Should Play It – Making the pilgrimage to Highland Links is seen as a rite of passage by many golf aficionados. It was the first true links course ever constructed in the United States. As outlined in the book True Links, the quaint track in Truro was identified as one of only four true links in the country, with the other three being located in Bandon, Oregon. What’s even better is that the course operates with an honor box during the winter. All you’ll need is a $10 bill, and you’ll be off and running at this one-of-a-kind course.
