The Massachusetts Amateur Championship returns to Essex County Club for the eighth time in its history. Essex most recently hosted in 2005, won by Frank Vana, Jr., a member of the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame. It has also hosted five USGA championships, most recently the 2010 Curtis Cup.
Established in 1893 just a quarter-mile from the ocean, Essex was one of the first country clubs in Massachusetts. The 180-acre property established its first 9-hole golf course in the 1890s, but it is the Donald Ross 1909-1917 layout the survives today. Ross embraced the rugged topography and emphasized the natural conditions by retaining native fescue grasses while thinning trees. By creating “chocolate drop” mound hazards, crowning greens, and carving a variety of bunker types, Ross created a structural-sound layout that provides an enjoyable and challenging playing experience.
