For the first time in two decades, the longest-running Mass Golf championship event — the Massachusetts Women’s Amateur — will take place at Dedham Country & Polo Club. The 120th Mass Women’s Amateur is set for August 14-18 and will be the fourth time the championship takes place at Dedham (previously in 1969, 1982, 2001).
In addition to hosting three previous Mass Women’s Amateurs, the club most recently hosted qualifying for the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, with LPGA Tour veteran Christina Kim earning one of two qualifying spots.
Dedham is renowned for being the lone golf course in Massachusetts designed by Seth Raynor, the most prolific associate of Charles Blair Macdonald. Macdonald and Raynor are famous for using “template” holes as part of their designs. Some of these holes, like the Redan, Biarritz, Alps, and Eden, can all be found at Dedham.
Raynor eventually completed the club’s first 18-hole course between 1923 and 1925 with the design of current holes six through fifteen. Modifications have been made over the years, including a significant renovation in 2018, but the course remains true to Seth Raynor’s intent.
Next year’s Women’s Amateur selection at Dedham fills out the schedule of Mass Golf signature championships, which include the 113th Mass Open at TPC Boston in Norton and the 115th Mass Amateur at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
