GARDNER, Massachusetts – Qualifying for the 39th Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship concluded Thursday with XX players earning a guaranteed spot into Championship Proper via the Gardner Municipal Golf Course qualifier.
The Mid-Amateur will take place September 19-21 at Marlborough Country Club, which is celebrating its centennial. Entries were open to amateur golfers who have reached their 25th birthday by September 19, 2022, and who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club not exceeding 5.4.
Matthew Andrade (Pine Meadows Golf Club), a 42-year-old from Lexington, led the pack with a score of 4-under-par 68. His day started with five birdies within the first seven holes en route to qualifying for his first Mass Golf championship.
Mark Lallak (Woodland Golf Club), the former chairman of the 2013 Mass Open at Woodland, also shot a bogey-free back nine as he made birdie on the 12th and 18th holes to finish 2-under and qualify for the first time.
Brendan Hester (Pleasant Valley Country Club), the 2001 Mass Amateur champion, shot 1-under to match fellow qualifiers, Mark Waskiewicz (Crumpin-Fox Club), and Christopher Piumelli (Beverly Golf & Tennis Club).
Gardner member Andrew Johnson, was one of seven players to make the cut at 2-over. Johnson is a first-time qualifier, and matched fellow first-timers David Krbec (TPC Boston), Bobby Lucy (Shaker Hills Country Club), and Ryan Stacy (Pleasant Valley Country Club).
