MARSTONS MILLS, Massachusetts – Qualifying for the 62nd Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship concluded Tuesday with 11 players earning a guaranteed spot into Championship Proper via the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds qualifier.
The 2022 Senior Amateur will take place September 7-8 at Framingham Country Club. Entries were open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 7, 2022, and who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club not exceeding 8.0.
Playing at one of his two home courses, Jeff Johnson (Barnstable Golf) qualified for the Mass Senior Amateur for the first time. Johnson shot 1-over 72 to match Bill White (Norton Country Club) for medalist honors. Johnson was 1-under 35 through nine holes and birdied the 560-yard, par-5 18th to finish at 1-over. White also qualified for the first time.
Scott Copeland (Old Sandwich Golf Club), who qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur last month for the first time, will also compete in the Mass Senior Amateur for the first time this year. He shot a 2-over 73, matching Doug Dannemiller (North Hill Country Club) and Michael Canavan (Brae Burn Country Club), who are also first-time qualifiers. Kevin O’Neil (Pocasset Golf Club) and Jim Forsgard (Pinehills Golf Club) both shot 3-over 74 to advance for the first time.
Michael McCarthy will compete in the Championship Proper at his home course of Framingham, as he advanced to the Senior Amateur for the third time in four years.
