As the calendar flips to August, qualifying has resumed for Mass Golf Championships. The first of four qualifying events took place for the 62nd Mass Senior Amateur Championship at Presidents Golf Course on Monday and The Ranch Golf Club on Tuesday.
The 2022 Senior Amateur will take place September 7-8 at Framingham Country Club. Entries were open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 7, 2022, and who have an active Mass Golf/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate Mass Golf member course/club not exceeding 8.0.
At Presidents Golf Course on Monday, 10 players qualified for the Championship Proper after carding a 2-over par or better. Segregansett Country Club members William Kidik and Bruce Barboza split medalist honors with Paul Mitchell (George Wright Golf Course), who played in last year’s Senior Amateur. All three shot even-par 70, which put Barboza in the Championship Proper for the first time he’s eligible, while Kidik is back in for the first time since 2019. Kidik was 3-over through 13 holes, but strung together three birdies on holes 13-15 to get back to even-par.
Wayne Swanson (Merrimack Valley Golf Club) shot 1-over to earn his first qualifying spot. Also through for the first time are Brian Theriault (Andover Country Club), Vin Sasso (The Haven Country Club), and Michael Friar (Acoaxet Club). Despite two consecutive double-bogeys on the back nine, Sasso made birdie on the 15th and 16th to make the cutline at 2-over.
Brendan Brazel (South Shore Country Club) earned one of the alternate spots at 3-over, but that was thanks to a hole-in-one on the 150-yard, par-3 10th hole.
At The Ranch in Southwick, Jim DiBiase (Woodland Golf Club), who won the Ouimet Memorial Tournament Lowery (Senior) Division in 2017, shot even-par 72 to lead the 17 players advancing to the Championship Proper.
Framingham members Dana McMaster and David Gottler also advanced with scores of 73 and 76, respectively, as did Ranch members Robert Wichowski and Bruce Hastings, who were 4-over and 5-over, respectively. Both Wichowski and Hastings are through to the Mass Senior Amateur for the first time. Curtis Foehl (Taconic Golf Club) was one of nine players to make the cut at 5-over 77, as his birdie on the par-5 16th got him back above the cutline.
The cutline fell at 5-over.
