In the final week of qualifying, 37 golfers advanced to the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship in qualifiers at Blackstone National Golf Club and Wayland Country Club on Thursday.
The Championship will be contested from August 10-11 at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland. The field is open to Mass Golf members who are bona fide players at a public Mass Golf member club — defined as any course that offers playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week — and maintain an up-to-date Handicap Index® not exceeding 12.0 at the time of registration.
At Blackstone National, Chris Corey (Green Hill Municipal Golf Course) finished as medalist after carding a 3-under 69. After getting into trouble with a triple bogey on the par-3 7th hole, Corey recovered with back-to-back birdies. The Worcester native tallied seven birdies during the round, including two on his final three holes to end as one of two golfers under par.
Kyle Devin (Braintree Municipal Golf Course), a rising sophomore at Bridgewater State and a Bridgewater High School alum, was also under par with a 1-under 71 to secure his first Amateur Public Links qualification. Devin matched Corey and Mike Lemerise (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) for the best 9-hole score of the day with a 34 on the front nine. At 19 years old, Devin was also the youngest golfer in the field to qualify.
Lemerise was one of four members of Cyprian Keyes Golf Club to advance to the championship proper. Joining him at the championship are Brett Malboeuf, the quad’s top finisher at 2-over 74, Stephen Larson, who clocked a 3-over 75, and Terry Dunn, who qualified with a 5-over 77.
Two Blackstone National members, Rick Bylund and David Holmes, also earned Public Links berths at their home course with a 76 and 77, respectively.
In total, 18 golfers made it above the cutline of 77.
At Wayland, Nick Leblanc earned medalist honors on his home course to secure his first appearance in the Amateur Public Links Championship. Leblanc, who was one of the youngest competitors in the field at 24, finished with a 2-under 68 after making birdie on his final hole. The Waltham native totaled three birdies and an eagle on the 503-yard, par-5 12th hole, the longest hole on the course.
Close behind was Ken Charnley (Norton Country Club), who shot a 1-under 69. Charnley previously played in the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship and in multiple Massachusetts Four-Ball Championships.
Nathan Patterson (Northampton Country Club) returns to the championship for the first time since 2019, when he finished tied for 39th. The former Rhode Island College and Franklin Pierce University golfer carded an even-par 70 on Thursday to punch his ticket.
The cutline finished at 4-over-par 74, as 19 competitors matched or surpassed to earn a championship spot.
