The Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship will take place at Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland for the first time this summer (August 10-11), and the road to qualifying for this public golfers championship began this week.
Entries for the event are open to amateur golfers whose whose handicap index does not exceed 12.0 and a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week
At Chicopee Country Club, Liam Gill (Highfields Golf & Country Club), who recently finished his first season with the Seattle University men’s golf team, led 15 qualifiers with a 1-under-par 70 that included four birdies. Joe Ciolek (The Ledges Golf Club) and Al Alminas (Franconia/Veterans Golf Course) both shot even-par, while Jesse Morgan (Northfield Golf Club), who placed T4 at the 2019 APL, shot 75. Alminas and Steve Hallquist (Amherst Golf Club) are both 66 years old and will play in the championship proper. Hallquist shot even-par on the back nine and made the cutline at 7-over.
At Norton Country Club, another 17 golfers qualified for the championship proper. Led by just 2 golfers who shot under par for the day, was Jack McDonald (Allendale Country Club) at 2-under-par 71, followed closely behind by Jared Winiarz (Norton Country Club) who shot a 70 at his home course. Finishing at 2-over was, Brian Kronmiller (Norton Country Club), and at 3-over were Sean McHugh (Norton Country Club) who finished with 4 birdies and Paul Mitchell (George Wright Golf Course) who finished with 3 birdies.
Over at Bayberry Hills, Jacob Raye (Sandwich Hollows Golf Club) shot 3-under 69 to lead 22 golfers advancing to the championship proper. Raye made eagle on his second hole and added three consecutive birdies on the front nine to coast to the top spot. Aidan McBride (Westover Golf Course), a member of the Springfield College men’s golf team, shot 1-under 71, and Alex McCallum (Cyprian Keyes Golf Club) shot 72.
Andy Horvitz (Allendale Country Club), who turned 70 earlier this year, qualified with a score of 76. Kevin McBride (Dennis Pines Golf Club) made birdie on the final hole to sneak above the cutline at 5-over 77.
