Mass Golf Celebrates Black History Month - MASSGOLF

MASS GOLF VIDEO SERIES TO CELEBRATE & HONOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

four-part series to highlight mass golf members

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FEBRUARY 1, 2022

NORTON, Massachusetts – This year Mass Golf will celebrate and honor Black History Month with an original video series. The scheduled four-part series will feature interviews each week in February, highlighting golfers from across the Bay State.

Representative of a diverse community of black golfers in Massachusetts, these individuals will share their personal history with the game of golf and their journey in the game. Additionally, the interviewees will discuss some of the challenges they’ve faced and ways the golf community can help make the game more inclusive and welcoming for all.

This series will help empower our community to celebrate and understand black history while also educating in order to create compassion. In past years, Mass Golf has used Black History Month to highlight other major events/figures such as:

  • Stow Acres CC (formerly Mapledale CC) hosting the first ever National Black Men’s Championship in 1926
  • Dr. George Grant, a dentist in Boston who invented the golf tee
  • John Shippen, the first black golfer to play in a U.S. Open, competed in his final U.S. Open at The Country Club in 1913.
Mass Golf’s Black History Month video series is set to begin on February 3, 2022.

Kolby Smith, one of the featured golfers in this series, and teacher at one of Mass Golf’s First Tee facilities, spoke during his interview about how the golf community can help make the game more inclusive.

“As a whole, people should be more inviting, more open, to have these conversations. In order for us to get to that next step, we have to just have the conversation.”
