NORTON, Massachusetts – After being rescheduled due to inclement weather, the final qualifier for the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship took place on Tuesday at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke. In total, 14 players took advantage to grab the final spots still open for the Championship Proper.
The Senior Amateur will be held September 28 and 29 at Pocasset Golf and is open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 28, 2021 and who do not have a handicap index that exceeds 8.0.
The day at Wyckoff belonged to Doug Riel, who was playing at his local club. Riel set the bar shooting an even par 69 and earning medalist honors by a commanding four strokes. Riel had a total of four birdies for the round, including consecutive birdies on holes 12 (par-4, 390 yards) and 13 (par-5, 478 yards).
Three players finished T2 behind Riel, among them was another Wyckoff Country Club player. David Sabourin shot 4-over 73 with two birdies on his final score card. That mark left him in a tie with Jay McConnell (Miacomet Golf Course) and Kenneth Gys (Mount Pleasant Golf Course) looking up at Riel on the scoreboard.
The cutline for the day would end up being 10-over 79. Both Patrick McKeown (Pocasset Golf Club) and Steve Jepsen (Lexington Golf Club) were just able to squeeze in and grab the final spots up for grabs.
